Located in Roseville, California, Tokubetsuna Shibas is a small preservation kennel born out of a deep respect for Japan’s "Natural Treasure." Our name, Tokubetsuna (meaning "special" or "unique"), reflects our commitment to honoring the distinct qualities that set the Shiba Inu apart from any other breed.

Our Story

My journey with the Shiba Inu began with an appreciation for their specific, cat-like nature. I was drawn to the breed’s manageable size, spirited attitude, and independence. Unlike many breeds that live to please, the Shiba’s "arms-length" loyalty and dignified autonomy represent a primitive intelligence that I find incredibly rewarding. This passion evolved into a preservation mission: to protect these traits while ensuring the breed remains healthy and functional for generations to come.

Our Standard of Excellence

At Tokubetsuna Shibas, we do not believe in shortcuts. Preservation means breeding for the future, which requires a foundation of transparency and data.

• Proven in the Ring: We believe a breeder’s "eye" must be validated. Our dogs are shown in conformation to prove they meet the strict AKC and NIPPO structural standards, ensuring they possess the correct balance, movement, and strong expression.

• Health & Genetics: Every dog in our program is AKC registered and undergoes comprehensive OFA health testing.

• Sound Minds: Because the Shiba temperament is so unique, we perform rigorous temperament testing. We aim to produce dogs that possess Kan-i (bravery) without aggression, and Ryosei (good nature) without losing their signature spark.

A Community Resource

As a small kennel, our focus is on quality over quantity. Every puppy is raised in our home, receiving individualized socialization to prepare them for the world. We view ourselves as lifelong partners to our puppy owners, serving as a resource for training, health, and breed education.
